Ain-Al Hayat,
The essence of life

Chapter1

point
‘ Ain- Al Hayat الحیاة عین
The book begins with the biographical descriptions of some of the truest Companions of The Prophet ( S, ) namely, Salman Farsi, Abu Dharr Ghifari and Miqdad Al- Aswad. Then in each chapter he picks up various themes related to the Existence of Allah SWT, His creation of the universe, the angels, His Attributes, Prophethood, followed by Imamah, The Day of Judgment, the value and rewards of good deeds etc. Allama Majlisi elaborates upon the aqaeed ( tenets of beliefs) in their various ramifications and shows us how to attain total devotion to Allah SWT. One chapter is devoted to the benefits of reciting The Quran as a whole and verses from various chapters. There is also very good advice about dealing with rulers and about helping one’ s brethren in faith, examples from the lives of Imam Husain ( as) and Imam Zaynul Abideen ( as) as well as supplications to be recited after each salaat and before going to bed. Negative behavioral traits that show the degree of one’ s belief and faith are listed and discussed. These include, inter alia, lying, greed, backbiting, false allegations, pride etc. The book also includes various supplications to be recited after each prayer, especially the tasbeeh and its merits. The book concludes with The Prophet’ s Will concerning Abu Dharr, the most truthful person.

PROPHET'S HISTORIC GHADlR SERMON

There is a humble translation of the Prophet's historic Ghadir Khumm sermon.

GHADIR

Ghadir

Introduction
The caravan returning from the Hujjatul- Widdah ( the Final Pilgrimage) of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his progeny, was halted unexpectedly. The archangel Jibreel ( Gabriel) had come with the message from Allah' : 0 Apostl! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people( ' Qur' an 5: 67). The place where the Muslims had stopped was at Ghadir Khum. The Prophet delivered a sermon and appointed Imam Ali, peace be upon him, as his successor. His words were' : 0 Muslim! Who is more worthy [ in the eyes of] the believers than their ownselves' ? The audience replied' : Allah and His Messenger know better' . Hearing this, the Prophet declared' : I am the Master ( Mawla) of the faithful and I have rights over them even more than what they have over themselves. Therefore of whomever I am the Mawla( , this) Ali is his Mawla' . The first to congratulate Imam Ali was Umar ibn al- Khattab who said' : Excellen! How fortunate you are 0 Abul Hasa! Now you have become my master as well as of all the Muslims' . This all happened 1, 400 years ago. But ala! The events following the death of the Prophet took a different turn and Imam Ali was by- passed as the mawla or the leader of the Muslims. Various reasons have been given for this, including: 1. By mawla the Prophet meant ' friend' . It is difficult to accept this. Would the Prophet have stopped the whole caravan to declare his friendship with Imam Ali and to make friendship to Imam Ali obligatory? 2. The Prophet did not appoint anyone and expected the Ummah to make a decision for itself. How can this be? Did the person who foresaw the fall of Khusrow and Caesar not see the plight of his Ummah after he was gone and not appoint a successor? And what of the occasions when he said' : Whoever helps me today will be my successor' and ' Tomorrow I will give the standard of the army to the one who will be my successor'? There is far too much evidence to show that the Prophet did indeed appoint his successor. However, history took its own course and what happened cannot be undone now. As a result, we have two major schools of thought - Sunnis and Shi' as. The followers of the two schools of thought are Muslims and this cannot be denied or challenged. The ways and means of Co- existence have to be identified. There has to be a healthy discussion between the two schools of thought with a view to increasing understanding between them. The declaration of kufr does not help the cause of understanding. The Muslims have far too many enemies. let us make sure that our enemies do not use our differences, such as they are, to thwart our unity. The event of Ghadir has to be looked at from a positive perspective. Ghadir should provide a means of uniting the Muslim Ummah and teach us lessons in leadership which are essential if Muslims are to once again achieve the position of eminence. Let the Eid of Ghadir, that we so enthusiastically celebrate the world over, be our pivot towards Islamic unity and leadership. Let our Sunni brethren present their viewpoints keeping in mind the two principles of Islamic unity and leadership. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Abdulaziz Sachedina, Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi and Brother HuseinKhimjee for their contributions. We would also like to thank Al- Tawhid Institute for allowing us to reprint the translation of A Study on the Question of AI- Wllaya by As- Shahid AyatullahMuhammad Baqir al- Sadr. PREFACE
This collection in your hand comprises of twelve pure traditions concerning Hazrat Mahdi ( a. s) . with six of them quoted from the famous books of eminent Sunni scholars and the other six narrated from famous Shiite sources. These traditions along with their translation and brief explanation are expressed in very concise, attractive and fluent manner. A brief glance over them can acquaint you with the dimension of Imam Mahdi’ s advent, the manner of his rule and the glad tidings given by the holy Prophet ( s. a. w. a) . and Imams ( a. s) . concerning him. One point that can clearly be observed in these traditions is that the matter of universal government of Imam Mahdi ( a. s) . is much higher than what a few among the ignorant can imagine. Besides, you can perceive this truth that awaiting his advent calls for spiritual, material, mental and physical preparedness and everyone claiming to be awaiting his advent cannot be labelled a true follower. It is also necessary to point out that the traditions related to Mahdi are neither peculiar to some fixed tribe among the Muslims nor reserved for the Shiite sect. These traditions can be found in all the Islamic t: 3 sources and in most instances, they are associated with delicate seasonings that reveal his style of rising and the contents of his invitation.
